How to Rank in Perplexity AI: Getting Your Site Cited
How Perplexity chooses sources, and what you can do to make your pages easy to cite.
Perplexity is an AI answer engine that searches the web, writes an answer and shows numbered citations linking to its sources. Being one of those sources can bring highly interested visitors. There is no way to buy or guarantee a citation, but you can make your pages easier to find, understand and quote.
1. Let Perplexity's crawler in
Perplexity documents its own crawler user agent (PerplexityBot) for surfacing sites in its results. If your robots.txt or firewall blocks it, your pages are less likely to be used. Check what your robots.txt allows with the AI crawler checker, and read should I block AI crawlers if you are unsure.
2. Rank well in regular search
AI answer engines often draw on pages that already rank well and are well linked. Strong traditional SEO β crawlable pages, good titles, helpful content, backlinks β remains the foundation.
3. Answer the question early
- Put a direct, two- to three-sentence answer at the top of the page.
- Use question-style headings that match how people ask.
- Follow with details, steps and examples.
Short, self-contained passages are easier to quote accurately.
4. Be specific and verifiable
Include concrete facts, definitions, steps, comparisons and examples, with sources for numbers. Generic text that repeats every other site gives an AI system no reason to cite you.
5. Show who you are
Clear author names and expertise, an about page, contact details and consistent business information help readers β and systems choosing sources β trust you. See what E-E-A-T means.
6. Keep content fresh
For topics that change, update pages with current information and show the date. Answer engines favour sources that are current for time-sensitive questions.

8. Track visits

A worked example
A solar installer's guide "How much does a rooftop solar system cost?" was rarely cited. They added a short answer at the top with a typical price range by system size, a table of costs, a dated "last updated" note and an author box for their certified engineer. They also confirmed PerplexityBot was allowed. Within weeks, Perplexity began citing the page for cost questions in their region, and analytics showed regular referrals.
Page elements that are easy to cite
- Definitions in one or two sentences near the top.
- Numbered steps for processes.
- Tables for prices, specifications and comparisons.
- Clear dates on information that changes.
- Named sources for statistics.
- Short FAQ answers to specific questions.
These also help regular readers skim, so they improve the page whether or not an AI tool cites it.
