How to Check If ChatGPT and AI Search Can Cite Your Page

Test whether AI assistants can access, understand and quote your page, and fix what stands in the way.

If an AI assistant cannot reach your page, cannot make sense of it or cannot find a clear sentence worth quoting, it will cite someone else. The free SeoSpidie GEO checker tests a page for these three things β€” access, understanding and quotability β€” and points out what to fix.

If GEO is new to you, read generative engine optimization explained for beginners first.

Step 1: Enter a page that answers real questions

Choose a page built around questions your customers ask: a guide, an FAQ-rich service page, a comparison or a product page with specifications. Pages that are mostly images or slogans give AI systems very little to work with.

Step 2: Review access

The checker looks at whether AI bots are allowed to crawl the page and whether it has a proper canonical URL. If key AI bots are blocked, decide whether that is intentional. Also confirm yourself that the page has no noindex or nosnippet tag. The AI crawler checker shows bot-by-bot detail and explains the difference between training and retrieval crawlers.

Step 3: Review understanding

Next come signals that help a machine understand the page and judge it: a clear heading hierarchy, structured data (JSON-LD), and author and date information. Common fixes:

  • Replace vague headings with specific ones.
  • Add Organization, Product or Article schema with the schema generator.
  • Make sure important text is not only inside images or loaded after clicks.

Step 4: Review quotability

Finally, the checker looks for content an assistant can lift cleanly: a direct answer near the top, FAQ or Q&A formatting, lists and tables, an answer-friendly length and specific numbers or stats. If your answers are buried in long paragraphs, rewrite the first sentence of each section as a direct, standalone answer.

Before: "There are many factors that can influence how long shipping will take, and we always try our best…"
After: "Orders ship within 24 hours and arrive in 2–4 working days anywhere in India."

Step 5: Test with the assistants themselves

Tools show readiness; the assistants show results. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot the questions your page answers, using search-enabled modes where available. Note whether your site is cited, and which competitors are. Look at those competitor pages β€” they reveal what the assistants found useful.

Step 6: Improve and recheck

Make the fixes, re-run the GEO checker and ask the assistants again after a few weeks. Keep a simple log of questions, dates and citations so you can see progress. For Google's AI answers specifically, also run the AI Overview optimizer.

Frequently asked questions

Can the GEO checker tell me if ChatGPT has cited my page?

No tool can see inside every assistant's answers. The checker measures readiness; testing questions in the assistants shows actual citations.

Why does one assistant cite me and another does not?

Each uses different search sources, crawlers and ranking methods. Strong fundamentals improve your chances across all of them.

Do I need special files like llms.txt?

An llms.txt file can summarise your site for AI tools, but support varies. It is optional and not a substitute for accessible, clear pages.

Is the GEO checker free?

Yes, with no sign-up.
