How to Track Instagram Traffic in GA4

See exactly how many visits and sales come from your Instagram bio, stories and ads.

Utm builder illustration

Instagram is a major traffic source for many brands, but tracking it in GA4 can be messy. Visits come through the in-app browser, link stickers, the bio link and ads โ€” and some arrive without clear referrer information, showing up as Direct or as several different sources.

How Instagram visits appear by default

Without tagging, you may see sources such as instagram.com, l.instagram.com or m.instagram.com, or visits counted as Direct. That makes it hard to compare your bio link with stories or ads.

  • Bio link: utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=social&utm_content=bio
  • Story link stickers: utm_content=story plus a campaign name.
  • Link in a post caption or comment (when shared via DM or guides): utm_content=post.
  • Ads: use a paid medium such as paid_social.

Build them with the UTM builder.

Step 2: Use a landing page that matches

Send visitors to the relevant page โ€” the product, the offer, the guide โ€” not just the homepage. If you use a link-in-bio page, tag each link on it too.

Step 3: Find Instagram in GA4

  1. Go to Reports โ†’ Acquisition โ†’ Traffic acquisition.
  2. Set the dimension to Session source / medium.
  3. Filter for "instagram".
  4. Add Session manual ad content to see bio versus story versus post.

Step 4: Connect to results

Mark purchases, sign-ups or enquiries as key events in GA4. Then compare not just visits but conversions and revenue from each Instagram link type.

Tips for cleaner data

  • Use the same naming every time. See how to use UTM parameters for social media.
  • Create a campaign name for each promotion so you can compare launches.
  • Check Realtime reports after posting a new link to confirm tracking works.

A worked example

An Australian swimwear label believed its Instagram ads drove most sales. After tagging its bio link, story stickers and ads separately, GA4 showed that story stickers during product launches brought the highest conversion rate, while ads brought cheaper but less engaged visits. The brand moved budget toward launch stories and creator collaborations.

Instagram Shopping links can be tracked the same way โ€” see how to set up Instagram Shopping and UTM parameters in GA4.

Questions your data can answer

  • Which brings more buyers: the bio link, stories or ads?
  • Which product launches drove the most visits from Instagram?
  • Do Instagram visitors browse several pages or leave quickly?
  • Which landing pages convert Instagram visitors best?

Pick one question each month, look at the numbers, and change one thing โ€” a landing page, a link placement or a content type โ€” based on what you learn.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Instagram traffic show as Direct?

The in-app browser does not always pass referrer data. UTM tags solve this.

Can I track clicks inside Instagram without GA4?

Instagram Insights shows link taps; GA4 shows what visitors do on your site afterwards.

Should the bio link have UTM tags?

Yes โ€” it is often your most-clicked Instagram link.

How do I separate ads from organic posts?

Use different utm_medium values, such as social for organic and paid_social for ads.
