How to Track ChatGPT and AI Search Traffic in Google Analytics 4

Find out how many visitors reach you from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot, and set up a clean AI channel in GA4.

People now find websites through AI assistants as well as search engines. When ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Copilot cites your page and someone clicks the link, that visit lands in your analytics โ€” but by default it is mixed in with other referral traffic, so it is easy to miss. With two small changes in Google Analytics 4 you can see exactly how much traffic AI tools send you.

Where AI visits show up today

Most clicks from AI assistants arrive as referral traffic with the assistant's domain as the source, for example:

  • chatgpt.com (and older links from chat.openai.com)
  • perplexity.ai
  • gemini.google.com
  • copilot.microsoft.com

ChatGPT's search feature also adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to many of the links it shows, which makes those visits easy to identify. Some visits from apps arrive without referral information and are counted as direct traffic, so treat your numbers as a minimum, not a total.

Step 1: See AI referrals in the standard report

  1. In GA4, open Reports โ†’ Acquisition โ†’ Traffic acquisition.
  2. Change the primary dimension to Session source.
  3. Type chatgpt, perplexity, gemini or copilot in the search box above the table.

You now see sessions, engagement and conversions for each assistant. Add Landing page as a secondary dimension to learn which of your pages AI tools are citing.

Step 2: Create an "AI assistants" channel

Searching every time is tedious. A custom channel group puts all AI traffic in one row:

  1. Go to Admin โ†’ Data display โ†’ Channel groups and create a new group (copy the default one so other channels stay the same).
  2. Add a channel called AI assistants.
  3. Set the condition: Source matches regex chatgpt|openai|perplexity|gemini\.google|copilot|claude\.ai.
  4. Drag the new channel above Referral, because GA4 assigns each session to the first matching channel.
  5. Save, then pick your new channel group in the Traffic acquisition report.

Custom channel groups also apply to past data, so you can see the trend from earlier months immediately.

You cannot add UTM tags to links an AI writes about you, but you can tag the links you place yourself โ€” in an llms.txt file, a GPT you published, or partner tools that recommend you. Use consistent values such as utm_source=chatgpt and utm_medium=ai. The free UTM builder creates these links without typos. For naming rules, read what UTM parameters are in GA4.

What to do with the data

  • Find your cited pages. Landing pages with AI traffic are the ones assistants trust. Keep them accurate and up to date.
  • Compare engagement. AI visitors often arrive with a specific question. If engagement is low, the page may not answer it quickly enough.
  • Improve pages that should be cited. Check them with the GEO checker and read generative engine optimization explained.

A worked example

A small software company added the "AI assistants" channel and looked back over six months. AI referrals were only about 2% of visits, but those visitors stayed longer and signed up for free trials at a higher rate than average, because they arrived with a specific need already explained by the assistant. The landing page report showed that three comparison pages received most of the AI clicks. The team kept those pages accurate, added clearer pricing tables, and checked each month that the pages still answered the questions people were asking assistants.

Small numbers can still be valuable. Watch the trend over several months rather than reacting to one week.

Frequently asked questions

Does ChatGPT traffic show up in Google Analytics?

Yes, mostly as referral traffic from chatgpt.com. Some visits from apps may appear as direct traffic because no referrer is passed.

Can I see which questions people asked ChatGPT before clicking?

No. Analytics only records the visit and the landing page, not the conversation.

Will the AI channel group change my old reports?

Custom channel groups are applied to your data when you view reports, so they work for past dates too, without changing the default group.

Is AI traffic counted as organic search?

Not by default. It is usually counted as referral traffic unless you create a custom channel.
