How to Add a WhatsApp Chat Button to Your Website
Let visitors start a WhatsApp conversation with one tap, and track how many do.
In many countries โ across Latin America, Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia โ customers prefer messaging a business on WhatsApp over filling in a form. A WhatsApp button lets them start a chat with one tap, often with a ready-written message.
Step 1: Create a click-to-chat link
WhatsApp's click-to-chat links use the format https://wa.me/ followed by your full phone number in international format โ country code included, no plus sign, spaces or dashes. You can add a pre-filled message with the text parameter.
The WhatsApp link generator builds the link, encodes your message correctly and can create a QR code. Our WhatsApp business link guide covers more uses.
Step 2: Write a helpful pre-filled message
- Product page: "Hi, I'd like to know more about [product name]."
- Booking page: "Hi, I'd like to book an appointment."
- Support page: "Hi, I need help with my order."
Different messages per page tell you what the visitor was looking at.
Step 3: Add the button
- Inline button โ a normal link styled as a button on contact, product or service pages.
- Floating icon โ a small fixed button in the corner of every page. Keep it small on mobile so it does not cover content or other buttons.
- Header or footer link โ always visible but unobtrusive.
A simple link needs no plugin. Avoid heavy chat widgets that slow down your page.
Step 4: Track clicks
In GA4, clicks on outbound links can be captured automatically with enhanced measurement, or you can create an event for clicks on links containing wa.me. Mark it as a key event to see which pages generate chats.
Step 5: Be ready to reply
A chat button only works if someone answers. Use the WhatsApp Business app's greeting and away messages, show your reply hours near the button, and set up quick replies for common questions. See how to get more WhatsApp enquiries.
Privacy and accessibility
- Mention in your privacy policy that chats happen through WhatsApp.
- Give the button a clear label ("Chat with us on WhatsApp"), not just an icon.
- Offer another contact option for people who do not use WhatsApp.
A worked example
A furniture store in Mexico added WhatsApp buttons to every product page with a message naming the product. Customers who used to abandon long forms began messaging with photos of their rooms. Chats became the store's main source of sales, and GA4 showed which products generated the most conversations.
Best pages for the button
Put it where questions arise: product pages, pricing, booking and contact pages. On blog posts, a small link at the end usually works better than a floating icon.
