How to Enable Pinterest Rich Pins for Your Website

Claim your site and add the right metadata so Pinterest shows extra details on pins from your pages.

Rich pins show extra information from your website directly on a pin โ€” for example an article's title and description, or a product's price and availability. They update automatically when your page changes, so pins stay accurate.

Types of rich pins

  • Article pins โ€” headline, author and description for blog posts.
  • Product pins โ€” price, availability and product details.
  • Recipe pins โ€” ingredients, cooking times and servings.

Step 1: Use a Pinterest business account

Convert your account to a business account (free), or create one for your brand.

Step 2: Claim your website

In your Pinterest settings, claim your website. Pinterest gives you a meta tag or file to add to your site to prove you own it. Claiming also gives you analytics on pins from your domain.

Step 3: Add the right metadata

Pinterest reads metadata from your pages:

  • Open Graph tags โ€” og:title, og:description, og:image, og:type, plus product price tags for products.
  • Schema.org markup โ€” Article, Product or Recipe structured data.

Most blogs and shops already output Open Graph tags. Check yours with the Open Graph preview tool, and read what Open Graph tags are.

Step 4: Let Pinterest apply them

Pinterest has changed how rich pins are enabled over time. Currently, it applies rich pins automatically when it finds valid metadata on a claimed site โ€” there is usually no separate application. If pins do not show rich details after some time, check the metadata on the page and Pinterest's latest help pages.

Products: use a catalog too

For shops, product rich pins work best alongside a Pinterest catalog, which creates product pins for your whole range and keeps prices and stock in sync. Create a catalog feed with the Pinterest product feed generator and read how to create a Pinterest catalog.

Common problems

  • Missing or wrong og:image โ€” use a large, high-quality image. See OG image sizes for social media.
  • Price missing on product pins โ€” check product price metadata.
  • Old pins not updating โ€” Pinterest refreshes data periodically, so changes take time.

A worked example

A food blogger's recipe pins showed only an image and a title. After claiming the website, they confirmed that the recipe plugin output Recipe schema with ingredients and cooking times. They also fixed a missing og:image on older posts. Pins began showing recipe details, and saves and clicks from Pinterest rose.

Make pins worth saving

Rich pins add details, but the image still decides whether people stop scrolling. Pinterest favours tall images (a 2:3 ratio is common). Clear, bright photos and a short text overlay on the image itself also help, while your page's metadata supplies the title and description.

  • Create a dedicated tall image for important posts and products.
  • Write descriptions that use the words people search on Pinterest.
  • Pin to relevant boards with clear names.
