OG Image Size for Social Media: The Right Size for Every Platform
One share image size that works almost everywhere, how each app crops it, and design tips that keep it sharp.
When your link is shared, the preview image does most of the work. Use the wrong size and it gets cropped badly, shrunk to a thumbnail or left out entirely. The good news: one size works well almost everywhere.
The standard size: 1200 ร 630 pixels
A 1200 ร 630 px image (an aspect ratio of about 1.91:1) is the safest choice for the og:image tag. Facebook, LinkedIn, X (with the large image card), Slack, Discord and many messaging apps display it well.
How platforms show it
- Facebook โ shows the full 1.91:1 image on large link cards. Smaller images may appear as a small thumbnail instead.
- LinkedIn โ displays 1.91:1 images well; 1200 ร 627 is also commonly recommended.
- X (Twitter) โ with
twitter:cardset tosummary_large_image, shows a wide image similar to 1.91:1. - WhatsApp โ often shows a smaller or square-cropped preview. Keep the key content in the centre. Very large files may be skipped.
- Telegram, Slack, Discord โ use the same Open Graph image, sometimes cropped.
File size and format
- Use JPG or PNG (JPG for photos, PNG for graphics with text).
- Keep the file light โ under about 300 KB to 1 MB โ so apps download it quickly; some apps skip heavy images.
- Use a full
https://URL in the tag.
Design tips
- Keep important content in the centre โ a safe area of roughly the middle 1000 ร 500 px survives most crops.
- Use large, short text, if any. Previews are small on phones.
- Add your logo subtly for recognition.
- Make one image per important page, not one generic image for the whole site.
Check how it looks
Preview your card on Facebook, LinkedIn and X with the free Open Graph preview tool, which also gives you the tags to paste. Make sure the image URL works with the image URL checker. For the tags themselves, read what Open Graph tags are, and for the step-by-step check, how to preview Open Graph link cards.
A quick design checklist
- Canvas 1200 ร 630 px, saved as an optimised JPG or PNG.
- Headline in large text, five to eight words at most.
- Key content inside the centre safe area.
- Brand colours and a small logo for recognition.
- Readable on a small phone preview โ zoom out to check.
- One image per important page, matching that page's topic.
Templates save time
Create one branded template with fixed areas for the headline and an icon or photo. For each new article or product, swap the text and image. Consistent share images make your links instantly recognisable in feeds and chats.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best OG image size?
1200 ร 630 pixels works best across most platforms.
Why does WhatsApp show no image?
Usually the image is too large, uses a relative URL, or cannot be reached publicly.
Can I use a square image?
Square images work in some apps but are cropped or shrunk on Facebook and LinkedIn. 1.91:1 is safer.
Why does the old image still show after I changed it?
Apps cache previews. Use the platform's sharing debugger, or add a version number to the image URL.
