Traffic Drop After AI Overviews? What to Do Next
How to confirm whether AI Overviews cost you clicks, which pages are affected, and what actually helps.
Many sites have seen a familiar pattern since Google expanded AI Overviews: impressions stay steady or grow, but clicks fall. When Google answers a question at the top of the page, fewer people need to visit a website. Here is how to check whether that is happening to you, and what to do.
Step 1: Confirm the cause
A traffic drop can have many causes: seasonality, a core update, technical problems, or AI Overviews. In Search Console's Performance report, compare periods and look at:
- Impressions stable or up, clicks down, click-through rate down โ typical of answers being given on the results page.
- Average position steady โ you still rank, but fewer people click.
- Affected queries โ mostly simple informational questions ("what is", "how many", definitions).
Search a few of those queries yourself to see whether an AI Overview appears.
If positions dropped sharply instead, look at technical or quality causes first โ such as pages that are crawled but not indexed.
Step 2: See which pages are affected
Switch to the Pages tab. Simple definition or fact pages usually lose the most. Tools, products, local services, detailed guides and opinion or experience-based content usually lose less, because a summary cannot replace them.
Step 3: Make pages worth clicking
- Offer what a summary cannot: tools, calculators, templates, real examples, photos, local details, your own data and experience.
- Answer the quick question, then go deeper into the follow-up questions.
- Improve titles and descriptions to promise the extra value, such as "with free template" or "with examples".
Step 4: Aim to be cited
Pages cited in AI Overviews still get visibility and some clicks. Structure pages with direct answers, clear headings and lists. Check your content with the free AI Overview optimizer and read how to optimize for Google AI Overviews.
Step 5: Shift effort to searches that need a website
Put more work into transactional and commercial keywords โ products, services, comparisons, local searches โ where people still need to visit and act.
Step 6: Measure other channels too
AI assistants beyond Google also send visitors. Track them with ChatGPT and AI traffic tracking in GA4, and build direct relationships through email and WhatsApp so you depend less on any single source.
A worked example
A personal finance blog lost about a third of its clicks on "what is" definition pages, while its calculators and detailed tax-filing guides held steady. Rather than writing more definitions, it added worked examples and downloadable checklists to its key guides. It turned its most popular definitions into short sections within larger guides, and invested in two new calculators. Overall traffic recovered partly, and sign-ups to its newsletter increased because the remaining visitors were more engaged.

Frequently asked questions
Does Search Console show AI Overview data separately?
No. AI Overview impressions and clicks are included in the normal Performance report.
Can I stop my content appearing in AI Overviews?
Snippet controls like nosnippet limit it, but also limit your normal search snippets. It is usually not worth it.
Which content is least affected?
Tools, products, local services, in-depth guides and first-hand experience.
Will traffic come back?
For simple fact queries, maybe not. Focus on content and searches where a visit adds real value.
