How to Write an SEO-Friendly Blog Post, Step by Step
A complete, repeatable process from keyword to publish button for posts that rank and get read.
An SEO-friendly blog post is simply a post that answers a real search well and is easy for both readers and search engines to understand. Here is a step-by-step process you can repeat for every post.
Step 1: Choose one main keyword
Pick a specific, long-tail phrase with real demand that your site can answer well. Check that no other post on your site already targets it. Read how to find long-tail keywords and how to find low-competition keywords.
Step 2: Study the search intent
Search the keyword and look at what ranks. Is it a guide, a list, a comparison, a tool? Match the format, then plan to be more helpful.
Step 3: Outline with headings
Write the H1, then H2s for each main section and H3s for steps or questions. A good outline is half the work. See how to use H1, H2 and H3 headings.
Step 4: Answer the question early
Give the main answer in the first two or three sentences. Then explain, add steps, examples and details.
Step 5: Write for people
- Short paragraphs, plain words, active voice.
- Lists for steps and options.
- Your own experience, examples and photos.
- The main keyword in the first paragraph and a subheading โ naturally, never forced.
Check sentence length and reading ease with the readability counter.
Step 6: Add internal links
Link to two to five related pages on your site with descriptive anchor text, and later add links from older posts to the new one. See what anchor text is.
Step 7: Add an FAQ
Answer three to five real questions from "People also ask". FAQs catch extra long-tail searches.
Step 8: Optimize images
Compress images, use descriptive file names and alt text. See how to optimize images for SEO.
Step 9: Write the title, slug and description
- Title: main keyword near the start, about 50โ60 characters.
- Slug: short, lowercase, hyphenated, with the keyword. Generate it with the slug generator.
- Meta description: 120โ160 characters that make people want to click.
Step 10: Publish, then improve
After a few weeks, check the post's queries in Search Console. Add sections for questions people search that you missed.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Writing before checking intent โ a perfect article in the wrong format will not rank.
- A long introduction before the answer โ readers leave.
- Targeting a keyword another post already covers โ the two posts compete.
- No internal links โ new posts stay isolated and are discovered slowly.
- Stock content with nothing new โ no examples, no experience, no reason to prefer it.
- Never updating โ facts go stale and rankings fade.
Avoiding these six mistakes puts a post ahead of most of what is published on any topic.
