How Readability Affects SEO and How to Improve Your Content

What readability scores measure, why easy reading helps your pages perform, and ten practical edits that make any article clearer.

People do not read web pages; they scan them. They look for the answer, skim headings and jump between sections. If your content is a wall of long sentences and unexplained jargon, readers leave โ€” no matter how accurate it is. Readability is about removing the friction between your reader and your message.

Is readability a ranking factor?

Not directly. Google does not run a readability score and rank pages by it. But Google's systems aim to reward content that people find helpful and satisfying, and hard-to-read pages tend to fail readers. Clear writing also makes it easier for search engines and AI systems to extract a direct answer, which matters for featured snippets and AI summaries. So readability is best seen as a quality multiplier rather than a ranking switch.

What readability scores measure

Most readability formulas, such as Flesch Reading Ease, combine two things: average sentence length and average word length (in syllables). Shorter sentences and simpler words produce an "easier" score. That is useful, but limited: a formula cannot tell whether your text is logical, accurate or interesting. Use scores to catch extremes, not as the goal.

As a rough guide, most web content for a general audience reads well at the level of a 13โ€“15-year-old reader. Technical audiences can handle more, but even experts appreciate clear writing.

Ten edits that make content easier to read

  1. Answer first. Put the main point in the first two or three sentences, then explain.
  2. Keep sentences short. Aim for an average under about 20 words. Split sentences with several "and"s or "which"es.
  3. Use short paragraphs. Two to four sentences. On a phone, a five-line paragraph looks like a block.
  4. Write descriptive subheadings. Someone skimming only the headings should understand the article's structure.
  5. Use lists for steps and options. Numbered lists for sequences, bullets for sets of items.
  6. Choose plain words. "Use" instead of "utilise", "help" instead of "facilitate".
  7. Explain jargon once. Define a technical term the first time it appears.
  8. Prefer active voice. "Google crawls the page" is clearer than "the page is crawled by Google".
  9. Add examples. One concrete example often replaces a paragraph of abstract explanation.
  10. Cut filler. Phrases like "it is important to note that" can almost always be deleted.

Formatting matters as much as words

Good readability also depends on layout: a comfortable font size, enough line spacing, enough contrast, and images or tables that break up long sections. Check your important pages on a phone, since that is where most readers will see them.

Measure, edit, measure again

The free readability and word counter shows your word count, sentence lengths and reading-ease score as you edit, so you can see the effect of each change. Frequently asked questions

What is a good Flesch Reading Ease score?

For general web content, roughly 60 or above is easy for most adults. Specialist content can score lower and still be fine for its audience.

Does simple writing look less professional?

No. Clear writing signals confidence and expertise. Complexity for its own sake usually hides weak ideas.

Should every article be short?

No. Readability is about how easy the text is to follow, not how long it is. A long guide can be very readable.

Do readability scores work for other languages?

Most formulas were designed for English. For other languages, focus on short sentences and clear structure.
