How to Use UTM Parameters for Social Media Posts
Tag social links so you can see exactly which platforms and posts bring visitors and sales.
Social platforms send traffic in many ways β app browsers, link-in-bio pages, shortened links β and analytics often misattributes it or lumps it together. UTM parameters fix this by labelling each link with where it was shared.
The parameters for social
- utm_source β the platform:
facebook,instagram,linkedin,x,pinterest,tiktok. - utm_medium β
socialfor organic posts;paid_socialorcpcfor ads. - utm_campaign β the campaign or content theme:
spring-launch. - utm_content β the specific post or format:
carousel-1,story,bio-link.
Read what UTM parameters are in GA4.
Why the medium matters
GA4 groups traffic into channels using source and medium. Using social (or similar values like social-media) puts organic posts in the Organic Social channel; paid values put ads in Paid Social. Inconsistent values send visits to "Unassigned".
Build links consistently
- Write naming rules: lowercase, hyphens, fixed source names.
- Build each link with the UTM builder.
- Shorten long links if the platform shows them, but test that the parameters survive.
- Keep a log of every tagged link.
Where to use tagged links
- Link-in-bio pages and profile links.
- Posts, stories and pinned comments.
- Paid ads (many ad platforms add their own tracking too β avoid conflicting tags).
- Community posts and groups.
Reading results in GA4
In Reports β Acquisition β Traffic acquisition, use Session source / medium or Session campaign. Add conversions to see which platforms bring leads or sales, not just clicks. Read how to build UTM links.
Common mistakes
- Mixing "Facebook", "facebook" and "fb".
- Using UTM tags on internal links within your own site.
- Forgetting to tag the bio link β often the busiest link of all.
A worked example
A UK bakery posted on Instagram, Facebook and TikTok and assumed Instagram brought most orders. After tagging every link with source, medium social and a campaign per promotion, GA4 showed Facebook groups brought fewer clicks but far more orders per visit. The bakery shifted time toward Facebook community posts for its order deadlines.
Tagged links also work in newsletters and ads β see how to track newsletter clicks in GA4.
A sample naming sheet for social links
- utm_source: facebook, instagram, linkedin, x, pinterest, tiktok, youtube
- utm_medium: social (organic), paid_social (ads)
- utm_campaign: month and theme, such as 2027-01-new-year-sale
- utm_content: bio, story, post, reel, carousel, comment
Share the sheet with everyone who posts for the business, including freelancers and agencies. A single shared list of approved values keeps reports clean for years.
Review the Traffic acquisition report monthly and look for unexpected source names β they usually reveal a link someone tagged by hand with a typo.
