Product Feed Optimization for Google Shopping: A Practical Guide
Improve the feed attributes that decide which searches your products appear for and whether shoppers click.
Google Shopping has no keywords to bid on. Google decides which searches your products appear for mainly from your product data โ the titles, descriptions, categories and attributes in your feed. An approved feed gets you listed; an optimised feed gets you seen and clicked.
1. Titles: the biggest lever
Put the words shoppers search for first, in a consistent order. A common structure is brand + product type + key attributes (size, colour, material, model).
- Before: "Classic Comfort 2.0"
- After: "Classic Comfort Men's Running Shoes โ Lightweight Mesh, Navy Blue, Size 9"
Optimise titles in bulk with the product title optimizer, and read how to write product titles.
2. Descriptions
Describe the product accurately with its main features, materials, sizes and uses. Avoid promotional text, shipping details and capital letters. Useful details help Google match long-tail searches.
3. Images
Use the clearest, highest-quality image as the main image, with a plain background and no text or watermarks. Add extra images for angles and lifestyle shots. See Google Shopping image requirements.
4. Categories and product type
Set an accurate google_product_category and your own product_type path (for example "Home > Kitchen > Cookware > Pressure Cookers"). They help Google understand products and help you organise campaigns.
5. Identifiers
Provide correct GTINs, brand and MPN where they exist. Accurate identifiers help Google match your product with searches and with other sellers of the same item. Read what a GTIN code is.
6. Detailed attributes
Fill colour, size, material, pattern, gender and age group where relevant. For variants, use item_group_id โ see product variants in Merchant Center.
7. Price, availability and shipping
Keep these accurate and in sync with your website. Competitive delivery costs and fast delivery times can make listings more attractive โ see how to set up shipping in Merchant Center.
8. Measure and repeat
In Merchant Center and Google Ads, find products with many impressions and few clicks (title or image problem) and products with few impressions (relevance or data problem). Fix the weakest products first, then check again after a few weeks.
A worked example
A cookware store had 400 products with titles like "Pro Series 5L". Impressions were low. The team rewrote titles to brand + "Stainless Steel Pressure Cooker 5 Litre โ Induction Base", added capacity and material attributes, and replaced lifestyle images with clean product shots as the main images. Over the next month, impressions and clicks on the optimised products rose clearly compared with the unchanged ones.
Feed optimisation priorities
If you have limited time, work in this order:
- Fix errors and disapprovals โ a disapproved product cannot show at all.
- Improve titles for your top 20% of products by revenue.
- Replace weak main images on high-impression, low-click products.
- Add missing identifiers (GTIN, brand, MPN).
- Fill colour, size and material for products where shoppers filter by them.
- Refine product types and descriptions for the rest.
Small, steady improvements to your most important products beat a one-time rewrite of everything.
