SEO Title vs H1 Tag: What Is the Difference?
Where the title tag and the H1 appear, whether they should match, and how to write both for the same page.
Every web page has a title tag and usually an H1 heading. Both name the page, so many people use the same text for both โ which is often fine. But they appear in different places, are seen by people at different moments, and can do slightly different jobs.
Where each one appears
- Title tag โ in the page's code (
head). It shows in Google results as the blue headline, in the browser tab and in bookmarks. People see it before they click. - H1 โ the main visible heading on the page itself. People see it after they arrive.
Should they be the same?
They should describe the same topic, but they do not have to be identical. A useful pattern:
- Title tag โ shorter, keyword near the start, written to earn the click, often with the brand at the end.
- H1 โ clear and natural for someone already reading, can be slightly longer or more descriptive.
If they describe completely different things, both readers and search engines get confused โ and Google is more likely to rewrite your title in results.
An example
- Title tag: Robots.txt Generator Free: Create the File in Minutes | SeoSpidie
- H1: How to Create a Robots.txt File With a Free Generator
Same topic, different jobs: one wins the click, one welcomes the reader.
Length guidelines
- Title tag: about 50โ60 characters, under roughly 600 pixels, so it is not cut off. See why titles get cut off in Google.
- H1: no strict limit, but keep it readable โ usually under about 70 characters.
Common mistakes
- A missing H1, or the logo used as the H1.
- The same title tag on many pages.
- A title stuffed with keywords that does not match the H1.
- Several H1s that each say something different.

Patterns for different page types
- Blog post โ Title: "How to Fix Redirect Chains (Step by Step) | Brand"; H1: "How to Find and Fix Redirect Chains on Your Website".
- Product page โ Title: "Cotton Kurta for Men โ Navy, Regular Fit | Brand"; H1: "Men's Cotton Kurta โ Navy Blue".
- Service page โ Title: "Emergency Plumber in Chennai, 24/7 | Brand"; H1: "24-Hour Emergency Plumbing in Chennai".
- Homepage โ Title: "Brand โ Free SEO Audit and Tools"; H1: a clear statement of what the site offers.
In each case both name the same topic, while the title is tuned for search results and the H1 for the page.

Frequently asked questions
Is the title tag more important than the H1?
The title tag is a stronger signal and controls your search headline. The H1 matters for structure and readers. Both should be done well.
Can the H1 be longer than the title?
Yes. The H1 is not limited by search result width.
Does Google use the H1 as the title in results?
Sometimes, when it rewrites a title it considers unhelpful.
Should both include the main keyword?
Usually yes, naturally. Do not force it in if it reads badly.
