How to Write Meta Descriptions for Product Pages That Sell
What to include in product meta descriptions, examples that win clicks, and how to handle thousands of products.
On a product page, the meta description is a tiny advert in Google's results. It is not a ranking factor, but it decides whether a shopper clicks your result or a competitor's. Most shops leave it empty or copy the first line of the product description โ a missed opportunity.
What to include
- What it is โ product name and key attribute.
- Why choose it โ the main benefit or standout feature.
- Buying details โ price or price range, delivery speed, free shipping, returns, cash on delivery.
- Trust โ warranty, ratings, made in India, handmade โ whatever is true and matters.
Keep it to about 150โ160 characters and put the most important part first.
Examples
- Weak: "Buy now. Best quality product at best price."
Better: "1-litre insulated steel bottle that keeps water cold for 24 hours. Leak-proof lid, BPA-free. โน899 with free delivery across India." - Weak: (empty โ Google picks random text)
Better: "Handwoven maroon cotton saree with zari border, 6.3 m with blouse piece. Easy 7-day returns and cash on delivery available."
Large catalogues: use smart templates
Writing thousands of descriptions by hand is unrealistic. Use a template filled with real product data, so each description is unique:
"{Product name} in {material}, {key feature}. {Price} with {delivery promise}. {Return policy}."
Then hand-write descriptions for your best-sellers. The programmatic SEO generator builds descriptions from a template and a list of values.
Mistakes to avoid
- The same description on every product.
- Prices or offers that are out of date.
- Keyword stuffing.
- Promises the page does not keep.
Write, preview and check

Templates for different product types
- Fashion: "{Product} in {fabric} with {detail}. Sizes {range}. {Price}, free returns within {days} days."
- Electronics: "{Brand} {model} with {key spec} and {second spec}. {Warranty} warranty, {delivery} delivery."
- Food and gifts: "{Product}, {weight or pack}. {Freshness or origin}. Delivered in {time} across {area}."
- Home and kitchen: "{Product}, {capacity or size}, {material}. {Key benefit}. {Price} with {delivery promise}."
Fill the templates from your product data, then edit the top sellers by hand.
Measure the result
In Search Console, compare click-through rate for product pages before and after updating descriptions, over four to six weeks. Pages with many impressions but low clicks are the best candidates to rewrite first.
Write for the shopper's question
Think about what someone comparing products in the search results wants to know in two seconds: Is this the right product? Is the price fair? How fast will it arrive? Can I return it? A description that answers those questions gets the click.
