How to Find Keyword Opportunities in Google Search Console

Use Search Console’s free data to spot queries you almost rank for, titles that need work and topics to write next.

Search intent cluster illustration

Google Search Console is the best free keyword tool you have, because it shows the real searches where your site already appears. Hidden in the Performance report are keywords you almost rank for, pages whose titles lose clicks, and questions you have never answered.

Set up the report

  1. Open Performance β†’ Search results.
  2. Choose the last 3 months.
  3. Turn on Clicks, Impressions, CTR and Average position.
  4. Open the Queries tab.

Opportunity 1: Queries on page two

Filter for average position greater than 8 and look for queries with decent impressions. These are keywords Google already connects to your site. Improving the ranking page β€” more depth, a clearer answer, better internal links β€” can lift them onto page one. See how to update old blog posts.

Opportunity 2: High impressions, low clicks

Sort by impressions and look for low click-through rates on good positions. The title and description may not be appealing or may not match the search. Rewrite them and preview with the SERP preview tool. If AI Overviews appear for these queries, read traffic drop after AI Overviews.

Opportunity 3: New questions

Filter queries containing "how", "what", "why" or "best". Questions you rank for only by accident deserve their own section or article.

Opportunity 4: Pages competing for one query

Click a query, then the Pages tab. Several pages getting impressions for the same query means they may be competing. See keyword cannibalization explained.

Opportunity 5: Long-tail phrases

Use a regex filter for queries with four or more words to find specific searches β€” often easy wins. Read how to find long-tail keywords.

Turn the list into a plan

Export the queries and group them by intent with the free search intent cluster tool. Each group becomes either an update to an existing page or a new page. Prioritise groups closest to your products or services.

A worked example

A digital marketing agency filtered queries ranking between positions 8 and 20 and found "seo audit cost in Chennai" with 900 impressions a month at position 12. Its services page mentioned audits only in passing. The team added a clear pricing section, what an audit includes, the time it takes and an FAQ, and linked to the page from two related blog posts. Within six weeks, the query moved to position 4 and brought steady enquiries.

Useful regex filters

  • Questions: ^(how|what|why|when|which|can|does)
  • Long-tail queries (four or more words): ^(\S+\s){3,}\S+$
  • Local intent: near me|in (chennai|bangalore|mumbai) β€” adapt to your cities.

Use the "Custom (regex)" option in the Query filter of the Performance report.

Compare date ranges to catch slipping pages

Use the date comparison option β€” for example the last three months against the previous three β€” and sort by the change in clicks. Pages losing clicks while impressions hold steady usually need a better title or a content refresh; pages losing impressions may have fallen behind competitors and need deeper updates.
