Breadcrumb Schema Markup: Example and How to Add It

What BreadcrumbList schema does, how to build it to match your visible breadcrumbs, and how to test it.

Schema generator illustration

Breadcrumbs are the small trail of links near the top of a page โ€” Home โ€บ Blog โ€บ Technical SEO โ€บ This article โ€” that show where a page sits in your website. Breadcrumb schema (BreadcrumbList) describes that same trail in structured data, so search engines understand your site's hierarchy clearly.

Why breadcrumbs help

  • Visitors see where they are and can jump up a level in one click.
  • Search engines understand how pages relate โ€” which category a product belongs to, which section an article is in.
  • Internal links โ€” every breadcrumb is a link to a parent page, strengthening category and section pages.

Google may use breadcrumb information when displaying your URL in results. How it is shown varies by device and over time, so treat any visual change as a bonus, not the goal.

What BreadcrumbList contains

A breadcrumb list is an ordered set of items. Each item has a position (1, 2, 3โ€ฆ), a name (the text shown) and an item (the URL of that level). The last item is the current page.

For example, for an article in your blog's Technical SEO category: position 1 is "Home" with your homepage URL, position 2 is "Blog" with the blog URL, position 3 is "Technical SEO" with the category URL, and position 4 is the article title with its own URL.

Rules to follow

  • Match the visible breadcrumb. The markup should describe the trail visitors actually see.
  • Use real, indexable URLs for each level โ€” not redirects or noindexed pages.
  • One logical path per page. If a product sits in several categories, choose its main one.
  • Keep names short โ€” category names, not long titles.

How to add it

Many themes and SEO plugins output breadcrumb schema automatically; check that yours does and that it matches the visible trail. For custom sites, build the JSON-LD with the free schema generator and add it to each page template, filling the levels from the page's real location. Read what schema markup is if you are new to structured data.

Test it

Use Google's Rich Results Test on a few page types โ€” product, category, article โ€” and fix any errors. Search Console's Breadcrumbs report shows valid items and problems across your site.

A worked example

An online bookstore had breadcrumbs on its pages, but its theme marked up every book as "Home โ€บ Book title", skipping the categories. Fixing the template so each book showed "Home โ€บ Fiction โ€บ Thrillers โ€บ Book title" gave search engines a clear structure and added internal links to every category page. Category pages started ranking better for genre searches within a couple of months.

Breadcrumbs pair well with a clean URL structure and good internal links โ€” see internal linking for small websites.

Common breadcrumb mistakes

  • Marking up breadcrumbs that are not visible on the page.
  • Linking the last item โ€” the current page normally appears as plain text in the visible trail.
  • Different trails in markup and on screen, often caused by two plugins producing breadcrumbs at once.
  • Category URLs that redirect or return errors, so each level points somewhere broken.
  • Using "Home" pages with tracking parameters instead of the clean homepage URL.

After a theme or plugin change, retest a product, a category and an article page, because breadcrumb output often changes silently with templates.

Frequently asked questions

Do breadcrumbs improve rankings?

Not directly, but they improve site structure and internal linking, which support rankings.

Should the homepage have breadcrumb schema?

No. Breadcrumbs describe pages below the homepage.

Can breadcrumbs differ from the URL path?

Yes. Breadcrumbs should reflect the logical site structure, even if URLs are flat.

What if my site has no visible breadcrumbs?

Add visible breadcrumbs first; markup should describe something visitors can see.
