Structured Data for Beginners: What Schema Markup Does for SEO

What schema markup is, which types still matter in 2026, how JSON-LD works and the rules that keep you eligible for rich results.

Search engines are good at reading text, but they still guess. Is "Apple" a fruit or a company? Is "4.8" a rating, a price or a version number? Structured data removes the guesswork. It is a small block of code that labels the facts on your page โ€” this is a product, this is its price, this is the business's opening hours โ€” in a vocabulary every major search engine understands, called Schema.org.

What schema markup can do for you

The visible payoff is rich results: search listings with extras like star ratings, prices, stock status, breadcrumbs, event dates or recipe times. These take more space and attract more attention than a plain blue link.

There is a quieter benefit too. Structured data helps search engines and AI systems connect your page to known entities โ€” your organisation, your products, your authors โ€” which supports how your brand is understood across search features.

What it does not do: schema is not a direct ranking boost, and adding it never guarantees a rich result. Google decides when to show them.

JSON-LD: the format to use

Schema can be written in three formats, but Google recommends JSON-LD. It is a self-contained script block you place in the page's HTML, separate from your visible content, which makes it easy to add and maintain. For a local business, it simply states the type of business, its name, phone number and address (city and country) in a structured way that search engines read directly.

Which schema types are worth adding in 2026

  • Organization / LocalBusiness โ€” name, logo, contact details, social profiles.
  • Product with offers and reviews โ€” price, availability and ratings for shops.
  • Article / BlogPosting โ€” headline, author, dates and image for editorial content.
  • BreadcrumbList โ€” shows the page's place in your site structure.
  • Event, Recipe, JobPosting, Course, SoftwareApplication โ€” when your page really is one of these things.

Two changes are worth knowing. Since 2023, Google shows FAQ rich results mainly for well-known government and health sites, and HowTo rich results have been retired. The markup is still valid, but do not add it expecting the old expandable results.

The rules that keep you eligible

  • Mark up only what is visible. Reviews, prices and answers in your schema must also appear on the page.
  • Be truthful. Fake ratings or invented reviews can lead to a manual action that removes rich results across your site.
  • Use the most specific type that fits, such as Dentist instead of just LocalBusiness.
  • Keep it up to date. A price in schema that differs from the price on the page is a common error in Merchant Center and Search Console.

How to add and test it

You do not have to write JSON-LD by hand. The free schema markup generator builds valid code for the common types from a simple form. Our walkthrough on generating JSON-LD schema without writing code shows the process. After adding the code, test the page with Google's Rich Results Test and watch the Enhancements reports in Search Console. You can also run a free site audit to see which schema types a page already carries.

Frequently asked questions

Is schema markup a ranking factor?

Not directly. It helps search engines understand your page and can make it eligible for rich results, which can improve click-through rate.

How long until rich results appear?

After Google recrawls the page, usually days to a few weeks. Even valid markup is shown at Google's discretion.

Can I add several schema types to one page?

Yes, as long as each describes something genuinely on the page โ€” for example Article plus BreadcrumbList.

Will wrong schema hurt my site?

Errors usually just mean no rich result. Misleading markup, such as fake reviews, can lead to a manual action.
