What Is Domain Authority in SEO and Does It Really Matter?

What domain authority scores measure, why Google does not use them, and how to build the real authority they try to estimate.

Competitor comparison illustration

"Domain Authority" (DA) is one of the most quoted numbers in SEO, often used to sell links or judge websites. But it is not a Google metric. It is a score invented by an SEO software company to estimate how likely a site is to rank, mainly based on its backlinks. Other tools have similar scores with different names, such as Domain Rating.

What these scores measure

Each tool crawls the web, looks at the links pointing to a site โ€” how many, from how many different sites, and how strong those sites are โ€” and turns that into a score, usually from 0 to 100. The scale is logarithmic: going from 20 to 30 is much easier than from 70 to 80.

Does Google use domain authority?

No. Google has said it does not use a "domain authority" score. Google evaluates many signals, including links, but its systems do not use any third-party DA number. A higher DA does not cause higher rankings; it is an estimate that often correlates with them.

How to use it sensibly

  • Compare, do not obsess. Use the same tool to compare your site with direct competitors.
  • Judge link opportunities roughly โ€” but always look at relevance and real traffic, not the number alone.
  • Track direction over time, not exact values. Scores change when tools update their data.

When DA misleads

  • A high-DA site with no relevance to your topic sends little value.
  • DA can be inflated with low-quality links that Google ignores.
  • A small, focused site with low DA can outrank big sites on specific, long-tail topics.

How to grow real authority

  1. Publish genuinely useful content in a clear topic area. See how to build topical authority.
  2. Earn relevant links naturally โ€” read how to get backlinks for a new website.
  3. Show trust and expertise โ€” see what E-E-A-T is.
  4. Keep a fast, clean, technically sound site.

Compare with competitors on what matters

Instead of one score, compare the things you can act on: titles, headings, content depth, schema, speed. The free competitor comparison tool lines up those signals for up to four websites side by side.

An example of why the number misleads

A local physiotherapy clinic with a modest third-party score of 15 ranked first for "physiotherapy for back pain in Madurai". A national health portal with a score of 80 ranked fifth. The clinic's page answered the local search better: its address, timings, therapist profiles, prices and patient-friendly explanations were all on one page, and it had links from local hospitals and directories. Relevance and helpfulness beat a high score.

Use authority metrics as a rough guide, then judge competitors by what their pages actually offer.

Frequently asked questions

Is domain authority a ranking factor?

No. It is a third-party estimate. Google does not use it.

What is a good domain authority?

It is relative. Compare your score with competitors in the same niche, not with large brands.

Can I increase domain authority quickly?

Not genuinely. Real authority comes from earning relevant links and publishing useful content over time.

Should I buy links from high-DA sites?

No. Buying links that pass ranking value breaks Google's spam policies.
