How to Find Local SEO Keywords for Your Business
Build a list of local keywords from your services, areas and real customer searches, then map them to pages.
Local keywords are the searches nearby customers use to find a business like yours β "dentist in Adyar", "AC service near me", "best biryani in Kochi". Finding the right ones tells you which pages to create and what to call them.
Step 1: List your services
Write down every service or product customers buy, in their words, not your industry's. A clinic might say "orthodontic treatment"; patients search "braces cost".
Step 2: Add locations
Combine services with the places you serve: city, neighbourhoods, nearby towns and landmarks. "Braces in Velachery", "braces cost Chennai".
Step 3: Add modifiers
- Intent β cost, price, near me, open now, booking, emergency, same day.
- Quality β best, top rated, affordable.
- Specifics β for kids, for women, home visit, 24 hours.
Step 4: Check real searches
- Google autocomplete β type your service plus your area and note suggestions.
- People also ask and related searches at the bottom of results.
- Search Console queries you already appear for.
- Your Google Business Profile performance β the searches that found your profile.

About "near me" searches
You do not need to write "near me" on your pages. Google uses the searcher's location to answer these searches. What helps is a complete Google Business Profile and clear location details on your site. See how to rank higher on Google Maps.
Step 5: Group and map
Group keywords with the same intent and assign each group to one page: service pages for services, location pages only where you have real local content, and blog posts for questions. See how to do keyword mapping and how to optimize service pages.
Step 6: Use them naturally
Put the main keyword in the page title, H1 and opening, and mention the area naturally in the content, reviews and contact details. Avoid lists of towns β see what keyword stuffing is.
A worked example
A pest control company in Pune targeted only "pest control Pune". Research showed people also searched "termite treatment cost Pune", "bed bug treatment for flats" and "cockroach control for restaurants". The company created service pages for termites, bed bugs and commercial pest control, each with pricing guidance. It added a blog post answering "is pest control safe for kids and pets". Enquiries became more specific and conversion rates improved.
A local keyword sheet
- Column 1 β service: AC repair, AC installation, AC gas refill.
- Column 2 β area: Coimbatore, RS Puram, Saibaba Colony.
- Column 3 β modifier: cost, same day, home service.
- Column 4 β real searches found from autocomplete and Search Console.
- Column 5 β page: which page targets it.
Combine the first three columns to generate ideas, but only keep combinations that appear in real search data.
