How to Generate Product Descriptions in Bulk From a Template

Use a template and your product data to create consistent descriptions for a whole catalogue, without producing duplicate filler.

Writing a unique description for every product in a 2,000-item catalogue is not realistic for most small shops. Leaving them blank, or pasting the same manufacturer text as everyone else, is worse. A template filled with each product's real attributes is a practical middle path. The free SeoSpidie product description generator does this in bulk and exports the results as CSV.

For what makes a description good in the first place, read how to write SEO product descriptions that sell.

Step 1: Prepare your product data

A template is only as good as the data behind it. Export a spreadsheet with one row per product and columns for the details that differ: name, brand, material, colour, size, capacity, key feature, use case, care instructions. The more specific columns you have, the more distinct each description will be. You can paste the list or upload a CSV.

Step 2: Write the template

Write one description as you would for a single product, then replace the specific details with placeholders for your columns. For example:

The {name} by {brand} is made from {material} and holds {capacity}. {feature}, so it suits {use_case}. Available in {colour}. Care: {care}.

Tips for a strong template:

  • Lead with the benefit, not the brand.
  • Use placeholders for every detail that changes; keep fixed text short.
  • Write sentences that still read naturally whatever the values are.
  • Write separate templates for different categories. A template for bottles should not be reused for bedsheets.

Step 3: Generate and review

Run the generator. Then read at least ten results from different parts of the catalogue, including products with unusual or missing values. Look for broken grammar ("a apple"), empty placeholders and sentences that do not make sense for some products. Fix the data or the template, and generate again.

Step 4: Export the CSV and import

Download the CSV and import the descriptions into your store using its bulk import feature, matching by SKU or product ID. Test the import with a handful of products before updating the whole catalogue. If you also publish a shopping feed, regenerate it afterwards with the Merchant Center feed generator so the feed descriptions match the new page copy, and tidy the matching titles with the product title optimizer.

Step 5: Upgrade your most important products by hand

Use generated descriptions as a solid base, then rewrite the top 10โ€“20% of products โ€” best-sellers, high-margin items, products you advertise โ€” with extra detail, real photos and answers to customer questions. That is where unique writing pays off most.

Avoiding thin, repetitive content

Search engines are wary of large numbers of pages with near-identical text. Template descriptions stay useful when:

  • Most of the words come from product-specific data, not fixed template text.
  • Each description includes details a buyer actually needs, such as dimensions, materials and compatibility.
  • Pages also have unique elements: their own images, specs tables and customer reviews.

If two descriptions are identical except for a colour name, consider whether those products should be one product with variants instead.
