How to Check Keyword Density of a Web Page for Free
Run a free keyword density check, read the phrase lists correctly and turn the numbers into useful edits.
You know what your page is supposed to be about. A keyword density check shows what it is actually about, judged by the words on it. The two are not always the same. Template text, menus, repeated calls to action and side topics can easily outweigh the subject you meant to target.
Here is how to use the free SeoSpidie keyword density checker and make sense of the output. For the theory behind it, read what a good keyword density is.
Step 1: Check a URL or paste your text
Enter a live page URL to analyse what is published, or paste a draft to check it before publishing. Checking a draft is often more useful: you can fix problems while the text is still easy to change.
Step 2: Read the single-word list carefully
The single-word list shows the most frequent terms, usually with common words such as "the" and "and" filtered out. Glance at the top ten. If your main subject is not among them, your page may be vaguer than you think. If the top words are things like "click", "menu" or "cookie", boilerplate is crowding out real content.
Step 3: Focus on two- and three-word phrases
Phrases are far more revealing than single words. "Phone" tells you little; "phone repair near me", "screen replacement" and "battery replacement cost" tell you exactly what a page covers. Look for:
- Your target phrase โ does it appear, and in a natural number of times?
- Related phrases โ are the subtopics a reader expects present?
- Surprises โ phrases you did not intend to emphasise, which may signal the page drifting off topic.
Step 4: Decide what to change
Target phrase missing or very rare: make sure it is in the title, H1, first paragraph and at least one subheading. Do not force extra repetitions into the body.
Target phrase extremely frequent: read those sentences aloud. Replace some repeats with pronouns, synonyms or more specific terms. The page will read better and look less like stuffing.
Important subtopics missing: add sections that answer them. The topical coverage calculator shows which of the subtopics on your list the page already covers and which are missing.
Using it on competitor pages
Run the checker on the pages that rank above you for your target search. You are not trying to copy their percentages; you are looking for phrases they cover that you do not. If every top result mentions "warranty" and "delivery time" and your page never does, that is a content gap worth filling in your own words. For a broader side-by-side, the competitor comparison tool compares titles, headings and other on-page signals.
Check for overlap between your own pages
If two of your pages show the same dominant phrase, they may be competing with each other in search. That is keyword cannibalization, and it is usually a bigger issue than density. Read what keyword cannibalization is and how to fix it if you spot this pattern.

Frequently asked questions
Does the checker count words in menus and footers?
When you check a URL, the page's visible text is analysed. Pasting only the main article text gives a cleaner picture of the content itself.
What density should I aim for?
There is no target. Use the numbers to spot extremes โ a phrase that barely appears or one repeated so often it reads unnaturally.
Can I check pages in other languages?
Yes. Word and phrase counts work for any language that separates words with spaces.
Is the keyword density checker free?
Yes, with no sign-up required.
