How to Find Internal Linking Opportunities on Your Website

Use a free tool to find where your pages should link to each other, then add those links with natural anchor text.

Everyone agrees internal links help SEO. The problem is finding where to add them. After a few dozen articles, nobody remembers which old post mentions which topic. An internal link suggestion tool compares your article with your other pages and points out where a link would naturally fit.

This guide uses the free SeoSpidie internal link suggestions tool. If you want the strategy behind it first, read our internal linking strategy for small websites.

Step 1: Choose the page you want to boost

Start with a goal: a page that deserves more visibility. Good candidates are new posts, pages ranking on page two of Google, and important service or product pages with few links pointing to them. Note the main topic and a few phrases people use for it.

Step 2: Run the tool

The tool works from two inputs: the text of the article you are working on, and a list of your other pages (their URLs and titles). It compares the keywords in your article with your pages and suggests which pages to link and where, based on keyword overlap. To boost a specific target page, paste the text of an older related article and include the target in your page list; repeat for a few related articles.

Step 3: Judge each suggestion

Not every suggestion should become a link. Accept the ones where:

  • A reader at that point in the text would genuinely want the linked page.
  • The source page is related in topic, not just sharing a word.
  • The paragraph does not already contain several links.

Skip the rest. A handful of relevant links beats dozens of forced ones.

Step 4: Write natural anchor text

Use words that describe the target page, adapted to the sentence. If the target is a guide to GST invoices, anchors like "how to create a GST invoice" or "our GST invoice guide" work well. Avoid "click here" and avoid using the identical phrase on every link.

New pages start with no internal links pointing at them. Use the suggestions to add two or three links from established, well-visited pages. This helps search engines find the new page quickly and shares some of the older pages' authority with it.

Step 6: Check the result

Make sure each new link points to the final URL (not one that redirects) and that it works. The broken link checker confirms every link on a page in one pass. Over the next few weeks, watch the target page's impressions and position in Search Console.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Linking every mention. Link a topic once per page, at the most useful point.
  • Linking to competing pages. If two of your pages target the same phrase, linking between them with that phrase confuses things further. Resolve the overlap first โ€” see how to find pages competing for the same keyword.
  • Only linking from new posts. Old posts with traffic and backlinks are your best source of internal authority.
  • Linking to thin pages. Improve weak pages before sending more visitors to them.
