How to Plan Programmatic SEO Pages From a Template

A step-by-step plan for template-based pages: pattern, data, template fields, URLs and the quality checks to run before launch.

The hard part of programmatic SEO is not generating pages; any developer can loop over a spreadsheet. The hard part is planning a pattern and template that produce pages people actually want. This guide walks through that planning with the free SeoSpidie programmatic SEO generator.

New to the idea? Read programmatic SEO explained first โ€” especially the section on thin content.

Step 1: Define the keyword pattern

A pattern is a search phrase with one or more variables, such as:

  • [course] colleges in [city]
  • [app] alternatives
  • [size] [material] storage boxes

Before going further, search a few real combinations in Google. If the results show useful, specific pages, the pattern has demand. If they show nothing relevant, or only giant directories, think twice.

Step 2: List your variables and data

For each variable, list the values you can genuinely support. For "[course] colleges in [city]", that means the courses you have data for and the cities where you know the colleges. Then list the data fields each page will show: names, fees, rankings, addresses, admission dates. The richer and more specific the data, the stronger each page.

Step 3: Design the template fields

In the generator, name your variable (for example city) and write a template for the title, the meta description and the H1, using the variable as a placeholder. Paste your list of values and the tool produces a title, description, H1 and slug for every value, ready to export as CSV. Plan the templates carefully:

  • Title and H1 built from the pattern, kept under about 60 characters even for the longest value.
  • Meta description that promises something specific, such as the number of colleges or a fee range, which your page will then show.

Then plan the parts of the page your CMS or code will fill from your data:

  • Main content blocks โ€” tables, lists, summaries โ€” filled from data.
  • Conditional sections that appear only when data exists, such as "scholarships available".
  • Related links to nearby cities or similar courses.

Step 4: Plan URLs and hierarchy

Choose a short, consistent URL format, for example /colleges/mba/chennai. Each level should be a real page too: /colleges/mba lists all cities for MBA. Keep slugs lowercase and hyphenated; the slug generator handles names with spaces, accents and symbols. Avoid putting the same page at two URLs.

Step 5: Quality-check a sample

Before generating everything, build ten pages from real data โ€” including a few with sparse data โ€” and review them honestly:

  1. Does each page answer the search better than a generic page would?
  2. Would two pages look almost identical apart from the name? If so, add data or remove one.
  3. Do titles and descriptions read naturally? Check them in the SERP preview.
  4. Are pages with too little data excluded?

Step 6: Launch in stages

Publish your strongest combinations first, add them to a dedicated sitemap and watch Search Console's page indexing report. If most pages get indexed and start earning impressions, expand. If many are "crawled โ€“ currently not indexed", improve the template before adding more. Link the section from your main navigation or a hub page so crawlers can reach it.

Frequently asked questions

Does the generator create the actual web pages?

No. It bulk-generates the titles, meta descriptions, H1s and slugs as a CSV. Building the pages and their content happens in your CMS or code.

How much unique content does each page need?

Enough that the page is genuinely useful by itself. Unique data is the most reliable source of that value.

What if Google does not index my pages?

Treat it as a quality signal. Improve data and usefulness, merge thin pages and strengthen internal links.

Is the programmatic SEO generator free?

Yes, with no sign-up.
