How to Find Google Product Category IDs for Your Feed
Search Googleβs product taxonomy, choose the most specific match and add the ID to your feed in a few minutes.
Google's product taxonomy has thousands of categories, and the official list is a long text file. Finding the right one for "handloom cotton saree" or "cast iron dosa tawa" by scrolling is slow and error-prone. The free SeoSpidie product category finder searches the official taxonomy for you and returns the ID and full path.
For when and why to set the category, read how to choose the right Google product category.
Step 1: Search with plain product words
Type what the product is, in simple terms: "saree", "tawa", "pressure cooker", "yoga mat". Avoid brand names and marketing language. If the first search returns nothing useful, try a synonym or a broader word β "griddle" instead of "tawa", for example.
Step 2: Compare the matches
The finder lists matching categories with their full paths. Read the paths, not just the last word. "Mats" appears in several places β yoga mats, bath mats, car mats β and the path tells you which is which.
Step 3: Choose the most specific category
Pick the deepest category that accurately describes the product. If there is no exact match, choose the closest parent category rather than a wrong specific one.
Step 4: Copy the ID or path
Copy the numeric ID (recommended) or the full path. Add it to the google_product_category column for that product in your feed or spreadsheet.
Step 5: Work through your catalogue efficiently
For a large catalogue, do not search product by product. Instead:
- List your product types β often a few dozen, even for thousands of products.
- Find the category ID for each type once.
- Map every product to its type's ID in your spreadsheet.
- Spot-check unusual products individually.
Search tips when nothing matches
- Use the international word. The taxonomy uses US English, so search "eggplant" rather than "brinjal", "cookies" rather than "biscuits", "sweater" rather than "jumper".
- Search the function, not the material. "Water bottle" finds the right category faster than "copper bottle".
- Go one level up. If "kurta" returns nothing specific, search "shirts" or "tops" and read the paths to see where similar garments sit.
- Ignore pack sizes and bundles. A pack of six steel tumblers is still drinkware.
Step 6: Validate the feed
After adding categories, run the feed through the Merchant Center feed validator. Then, after Merchant Center processes it, check a few products to see that Google uses the category you submitted.
Examples
- Cotton saree β a path under Apparel & Accessories > Clothing for traditional and ceremonial clothing.
- Pressure cooker β Home & Garden > Kitchen & Dining > Kitchen Appliances > Pressure Cookers (or the nearest current equivalent).
- Yoga mat β a path under Sporting Goods > Athletics or Exercise & Fitness, depending on the current taxonomy.
Always confirm with the finder, since category names and IDs can change between taxonomy versions.
